Venus

Venus was the Roman goddess of desire, physical and intellectual love, sex, beauty, prosperity and fertility. To the Greeks she is known as Aphrodite. With a fluid sexuality, embracing male and female lovers alike, Venus was the guardian of lovers and prostitutes. She is also associated with the Egyptian goddess, Isis.

Venus is often featured with a crown of myrtle, a rose (symbolizing fertility, sexual passion and female genitalia) and sea shells, referencing her birth at sea.

The face of Venus, as depicted in Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, reminds me of the face of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose passion for social causes and human rights moves my heart.
